Shaking The Tree is one of a collection of limited edition archival inkjet prints published to celebrate a catalogue of truly remarkable and unique soundworks by Peter Gabriel. All of the arrangements for Peter Gabriel's portrait sitting with Robert Mapplethorpe were made by Alex Knaust, Mapplethorpe's close friend, stylist and agent throughout the 1980s decade. Knaust also did the styling of Gabriel for this photo session which took place in December 1986 at Mapplethorpe's 23rd St. home studio in New York City. One of Mapplethorpe's colour photographs of Gabriel from this sitting was used for the January 1987 cover of Rolling Stone magazine. In 1990, a year after Mapplethorpe's tragic death, two of his black and white photographs of Gabriel were used for the compilation album, Shaking The Tree. Following every photo session that Mapplethorpe did, it was his practice to look through the contact sheets and colour transparencies from them and select the images that he wanted printed. Knaust would then look through the contact sheets and colour transparencies and occasionally select additional images to be printed from sessions that they worked on together. This was the case with Knaust's selection of the eyes closed and open photographs of Gabriel used for the front and back covers of the Shaking The Tree album, which were reproduced with the same white borders that Mapplethorpe chose to use for his prints.

Robert Mapplethorpe was born in 1946 in Floral Park, Queens. His vast, provocative, and powerful body of work has established him as one of the most important artists of the twentieth century. Today Mapplethorpe is represented by galleries in North and South America and Europe and his work can be found in the collections of major Museums around the world. Beyond the art historical and social significance of his work, his legacy lives on through the work of the Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation. He established the Foundation in 1988 to promote photography, support museums that exhibit photographic art, and to fund medical research in the fight against AIDS and HIV-related infection. The limited edition is authorised by the Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation.

Shaking the Tree: Sixteen Golden Greats was released in 1990 as Peter Gabriel’s first ‘greatest hits’ album, including songs from his first solo album Peter Gabriel (1 or Car - 1977), through Passion: Music for The Last Temptation of Christ (1989). It was re-mastered in 2002.
